Top Curly Hair Tips from the Best Baltimore Hair Stylist

March 19, 2017 by Boris

Amy R Brooks rocks big curls all the time, but sometimes her hair overwhelms her. She sat down with Baltimore hair stylist, Boris Borovsky, to discuss curly hair tips to get her hard to manage curly hair looking as “glorious” as possible.

Amy: I’m thrilled to pick your brain about my hair. I have so many questions!

Boris: I’m an open book; ask away!

A: Just to set the stage for readers, I have very curly hair that gets dry and frizzy. I’m worried I should be doing something to moisturize it, but I have no idea where to start.

B: How frequently do you wash your hair?

A: Good question. Usually every other day and sometimes every day. Why?

B: Washing your hair every day, and this applies to lots of different hair types, can really deplete your scalp of natural oils. It’s so drying; even if you use conditioner. I recommend washing your hair once a week if you can stand it. If that feels too long, try washing every few days and then extend the time between washes as you get used to it. [Read more…]

Breaking Up With Your Stylist

June 24, 2014 by Boris

I’ve been seeing my stylist for a few years now. She always does the same thing. I want something new ! I show her pictures and tell her what I want, but she still does what she wants. How do I break up with my hairstylist ?  A. This is one of the hardest decisions you’ll ever have to make.. if you can change the relationship to make both of you happy then you should do that.  First, let your stylist know you’re unhappy. Let her know whySecond, tell her what will make you happy… (new hairstyle, color, etc.) I know that sounds cheesy but it can work Now all you do is see if she follows through. Did she give you the haircut and hairstyle you’ve been looking for Did she finally color your hair the way you want and not the way she wantsIf so, then you should give her another chance and if not just stop going to her All in all you’ve tried all you could, but it just isn’t working out. This is when you find a new updated stylist. Someone who’s up for change, when you’re ready, not when they’re ready.

Stylist Crisis 101

May 14, 2014 by Boris

My stylist is booked, but I need to get in today. What should I do ?  Make sure to ask the receptionist if you can speak to your stylist. Talk about what you should doIf they cannot get you in today and you can’t wait until the next day ask them to refer you to another stylist that they trust.. someone that will do your hair just as good as they would have.  A good recommendation for the future is to make your hair appointments before you leave. You can schedule as many as you need to.. whether it’s a month, a year ahead or appointment at a time…  Either way, if you do this.. you won’t have to scramble around at the last minute worrying if you can get in… it’s not worth it. So in the end make sure to make your appointments ahead of time and save yourself the hassle and frustration.

Great news for hair color clients

April 4, 2014 by Boris

When your stylist colors your hair, you leave the salon with radiantly gorgeous hair. In the days and weeks that follow until your next hair color appointment, you want your hair to continue to look shiny and luminous, with the shine and the shade/tone as vibrant as day one.

But each time that you wash your hair, some of your color fades,, expose your hair to uv rays, use a dryer or a flat iron to style your hair you lose some of pigment. Unless you colorist/stylist informs you of your options regarding color care systems that are available  to you to help you maintain your color between appointments. Such as cream, mask, shmpoo, shine spray, night mask and more, to help you get the most out of your hair color.

Getting Rid of Green Hair

January 3, 2014 by Boris

What causes my hair to turn green?

Getting green hair is one of the most disastrous and time consuming annoyances of them all.

There are 3 major causes of “green hair”

  • Swimming
  • Hair color
  • Hard (well) water

Continue reading to see the “why” and “solution” to the mystery behind green hair…

Swimming

Your hair is like a sponge… when you get into the pool and dip your head into the water it soaks up the chlorine and over time ends up giving your hair a green cast. If your hair is blonde you will have green hair. The green hair develops from exposure to chlorine and is related to the hard metals found in the water.

Solution: If your hair is already green use Paul Mitchell’s shampoo 3… it removes chlorine and impurities keeping the hair healthy and moisturized – To keep the green from coming back, you need to wet your hair with fresh water in the sink, shower or use a water bottle. Then apply a little conditioner to coat the hair shaft. If you use a water bottle put conditioner in it, this will put a barrier on the hair not allowing anything else to soak up. -Spray a leave in conditioner in your hair before going swimming – You could try wearing a swimmers cap

Hair Color

From home color to over-processed hair, if you have blonde hair do not color your hair without seeing your stylist… if your hair is over-processed and/or damaged you have a higher risk of it turning green.. You will know it’s damaged or over-processed because it will be very dry, brittle and resemble cotton candy (NOT GOOD!) Blondes are more than likely to have green hair quicker than brunettes. (b.) Solution- I always recommend seeing your stylist in these situations

Hard (Well) Water

With the high amount of copper, nickel and other chemicals found in your hard water, you’re bound to get copper or a green tint…  (c.) SolutionIf you can, get a water softener, if that’s not possible there are filters for the shower head at reasonable prices. Purple/blue shampoo for blondes and grey (like shimmer lights at Sally’s) are also another remedy to try to remove the green.  Other removal methods:a) Baking Soda mixed with regular shampoo making a paste. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes then rinse in cold water and condition.b) Malibu treatment, you’ll need to go to the salon for this treatment.c) Lemon juice – leave in the hair for at least 15 minutes before rinsing. Then shampoo and condition as usual.d) Ultra Swim Shampooe) Aspirin – put 6 to 10 aspirin into a glass of water and allow it to dissolve, saturate you hair with the aspirin mixture, let it sit about 15 minutes, rinse, shampoo and condition as usual. f) Vinegar – Apply to the hair and allow to sit 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse, shampoo and condition as usual. Although leaving the conditioner on about 15 minutes. The vinegar will be drying on the hair.

Now that you have some information on what causes green hair and how to handle it, you can relax and know what to do the next time it happens to you or someone you know.
